Episode 41: Lyndi Barrett of Style Calling

After months of failures, the Hags finally succeeded in getting our guest Lyndi Barrett of StyleCalling.com into the basement for a hot chat. Turns out all it took was for our schedules to work out! And don’t get too bothered, it was only hot temperature-wise: Lyndi is very cool. And she knows all the best fashion words. Let’s get into it, mmk?

Before you do anything, check out her gorgeous blog, Style Calling if for nothing other than dreamy pics of her adorable dog Madison. He’s so fancy he lives in a mountain chalet in Whistler. What a gooooood booooooooyyy!!

One of the great words Lyndi knows is Ruana, a drapey scarf-style cover up like this one that Katie found at the East Side Flea. Please ignore the fact that this photo was not taken by a professional or even in a room resembling anything remotely close to professional. If there is one thing the Hags are not, it’s professional.

Lyndi is also a teacher at Blanche MacDonald here in Vancouver. It’s a great school that primarily focusses on esthetics and make-up design but they also have a Fashion Design program that is worth checking out if you are curious about Fashion Schools.

Obsessions!

Abby and Katie jointly were obsessed with The Keepers on Netflix. It’s a tough watch but so good. Get ready to get angry enough to pace the floor a few times.

Lyndi is also obsessed with the documentaries on Netflix and with so many to choose from, how can you pick just one?

Screen Shot 2017-06-06 at 6.20.53 PM.png

Katie is obsessed with a new pair of shoes she got from Maiwa on Granville Island here in Vancouver. These handmade leather Jutis simply could not be left in the store because I mean, please.

Evan paid a trip to Hey Jude and fell in love with the Boy Smells candles they have available there. His first choice is “Kush” but there are lots of smelly boys to choose from.

For some reason we’ll never understand (yeah right) Abby is obsessed with a new app called Patternator:

Episode 40: Sewing Wins and Woes

First of all, THANK-YOU TO EVERYONE WHO ORDERED A SHIRT YOU GUYS ARE DOPE AS SHIT AND WE LOVE YOU DEARLY. We could not be more excited about it and we have the best fans in the universe.

Don’t forget there is only one way to wear it: HOWEVER THE HELL YOU WANT.

RSS FEED: http://fashionhags.libsyn.com/rss

This episode is all about sewing and the love/hate relationship we have with it (and we suspect all sewers have as well). But before we get into it, Abby as really been keen on Margot’s personal style choices lately and we must agree (partly because those boots are directly from our youth):

Screen Shot 2017-05-23 at 5.38.03 PMScreen Shot 2017-05-23 at 5.38.58 PM

Evan has been dancing with a local Metis dance company and invited some pals out to participate in a fundraiser. It basically turned into a Metis kitchen party complete with a fiddle player and old songs from way back when.

Katie got a brand new hair cut for the summer but, more importantly, has been making more combs and they are turning out pretty great.

IMG_9766.JPG

She’s also been swooning over a gorgeous First Nation cedar woven hats like this one by Haida artist and weaver Donna Cranmer (available at I-Hos Gallery):

Screen Shot 2017-05-23 at 5.50.30 PM.png

On to the meat of the matter: sewing is the backbone of the fashion industry and gets little attention in the grand scheme of things, especially considering how much there is to know and learn about it. It is a skill that used to be much more prevalent in the common population but has become less and less necessary to learn in the days of fast fashion.

In fashion school, all the Hags had to make a bunch of garments to learn specific skills and patterns, including this hideous vest, not for human consumption:

A basic diagram of knits versus wovens (very basic – there are tonnes of variations of both):

Obsessions!

Evan is obsessed with three things this week but we’ll allow it. He’s getting to know his indigenous background more thoroughly and has been listening to a trifecta of podcasts:
Ryan McMan’s Red Man Laughing, Media Indigena, and Skoden Chronicles.
If you are interested in indigenous cultures and Canadian indigenous history, give these a listen!

Abby has been obsessed with The Dressmaker:

Katie is obsessed with finding the perfect Spring jacket. It’s hard to pin down, it doesn’t have a specific shape or style or colour, but it is out there and it will be found. It isn’t any of these google images, that’s for sure.

Episode 34: Stitch & Bitch 2 Featuring Claire Gabereau

Inspired by a handful of great emails we’ve received in the last little while, we decided to go back to one of our most fun episodes to record – a good old fashioned stitch and bitch. We invited our former classmate and local costumer/performer/Technical Developer/super rad lady Claire Gabereau to join in the sesh and boy, does it get giggly.

Evan has been regaling us with stories of a new puppy – yes please always – and Abby, despite being a full time Mom of two babes, has outdone the rest of us with perfect nails, just like in school. Infuriating.

Katie and Abby went to a sports – a hockey, to be exact – and it was very out of character but super fun. One of the teams won the sports and a good time was had by all.

Claire has been rehearsing for an upcoming dance performance as part of an art show called Ciliate 9. Check out the facebook event and go support local artists/musicians, performers!

Claire works for a local based global company essentially as a garment nerd. It is so great that she/we have been able to find work that is rewarding as it is not always easy to find work in fashion at all, let alone something you actually enjoy.
It is also worth mentioning that you finishing school does not mean you actually know anything. The amount there is left to learn is  much much much vaster than what you see in school. So exciting!

Internships are often a part of the fashion education but not always. The expectation that you work for free is almost always part of an internship.

Obsessions!

Katie is obsessed with a cute foxy fabric and the making of a cute summer skirt (with pockets!)

Episode 33: Fashion For Good, Not Evil

It’s the season of love and the Hags are looking for good things to love in Fashion. And guess what? Despite the turmoil the world seems to be in these days, we managed to find some! Time for a chit chat on a handful of fashion companies that are using their powers for good rather than evil – can it be true?! It can and it is, Hags. Give it a listen, mmk?

LISTEN HERE: EPISODE 33

Before getting into the fun stuff, Abby enlightens us about a major Mothering win – pulling off the impossible task of getting a toddler, an infant, and a caught-off-guard Mom to a birthday party in 15 minutes. Not all the boxes were checked but it was good enough. Who needs a bra anyway.

Katie went 5-pin bowling and it was a goddamn riot. Turns out it is not just for children despite the size of the balls.
com_lanes500.jpg

Evan has been really enjoying the Metis dancing he’s signed up for – is there a downside to connecting to your roots while shaking your ass in a effectual way at the same time? No there is not.

Fashion for good, not evil – how it is possible? It’s a worldwide industry that is massively exploitative and polluting across most brands so it’s hard to find big companies to feel good about. But it turns out there are a few and they are worth a full podcast of discussion because we should all be paying more attention.

Katie’s example is Patagonia – a leader in the outdoor lifestyle industry – who recently pulled out of the Outdoor Retailers show in Salt Lake City, Utah as a protest against the Utah government’s land protection (or lack thereof) policy regarding the Bears Ears National Monument.

The initial article from Teton Gravity is here; the Guardian articles are here and here. Read them and read some more and then some more. A google search with a pile of info is easy to find (here’s one) so let us know what you think about this kind of action to get some shit done.

Here’s Obama kitesurfing for some feel goods. God damn he will be missed.

Abby enlightens the Hags about some cool shit H&M are doing to triumph over evil (and the bottom line, lets be real). The Conscious Collection was a good first step for the company but they are working to turn those little steps into bigger steps forward, primarily in Myanmar. Read about it here.

Pictures3-1024x640.jpg

It is a bummer that H&M has been embarrassed before for the low ages of workers in their factories in Myanmar, but, they are trying to end the days of the $5 t-shirt (hopefully…) and it has to start somewhere. (Links are to the same article.)
They are also employing Syrian refugees in Turkey (which, as it turns out, may be not such a good thing? Employing people in need is a good thing but employing children in need is maybe not so good…)

Also, if you aren’t already, listen to Retail Nightmares because it is hilarious and delightful and weird and just so great.

tumblr_static_ab1bw84rb8gkow8ckw8s8gcg8_2048_v2.jpg

Evan tells us about some cool shit that Opening Ceremony is doing in light of the batshit craziness that is the Muslim ban in the US. As immigrants themselves, its designers are donation 100% of their profits from their Action capsule collection to the ACLU. Say what?!

It’s pretty cool to see a cool,  young, hip company like Opening Ceremony step up to the powers that be and raise some shit up when they see a need for it. Plus, the prices are decent enough that these pieces will sell and generate some real funds for the ACLU.

Obsessions!

Evan is obsessed with The Young Pope and Jude Law in particular for his Hannibal-esque performance.

The Papal Tiara, btw:

220px-Papal_Tiara_with_silver_gems_pearls.jpg

Katie is obsessed with The OA on Netflix because it is storytelling done right and hella weird at the same time:

Abby is obsessed with Iris Van Herpen’s couture show because she is also weird as shit and infinitely creative:

PS – the M2M video of the show is here so watch it now and then watch all the other Iris Van Herpen videos because she is a wizard.
The Queens of Couture documentary is also worth a watch (or rewatch) on M2M too.

Episode 31: Models and Modelling and Things Like That

Guess what, hunnies! We have a new episode and a new Hag! Our first guest of 2017 is only a few weeks old but she’s got some strong feelings so far. You’ll hear some of them on this episode, where we chit chat about our favourite Models and some other tangential nonsense.

LISTEN HERE: EPISODE 31

RSS FEED: http://fashionhags.libsyn.com/rss

Jumping right in, our episode was inspired by the new iteration of America’s Next Top model which has been on repeat on Abby’s tv.

ANTM-Panelists.jpg

The new faces of ANTM: Panelist and Paper editor Drew Elliot, ANTM’s new host Rita Ora, Stylist Law Roach, and model Ashley Graham

Modelling, as with all things in fashion, shifts and changes with the trends of the industry. Some of us (Evan and Abby) are better than others (Katie) when it comes to models and the whole modelling thing so we’ll do our best to keep on track (mostly).

One thing we can all agree on: Dovima is a glamorous badass who we can all appreciate.

photo-book-p034-2.jpg

And that Veruschka is an amazonian goddess:

3c3335b6f05a6bf59a24adfad4aa97d9.jpg

China Machado broke the mold for non white models with the help of Richard Avedon. Sadly, she passed away in December but we will always have her on Google Images!

Fei Fei Sun as China Machado for Vogue Italia:

Modelling can be a weird and icky-feeling thing to talk about which is partly why Katie doesn’t invest a lot of time paying attention to modelling (and because the clothes always take precedence because fashion). It is important to be diverse and respectful when choosing models but unfortunately, lots of times it isn’t done particularly well when it comes to filling a runway with people who are not only white. It’s a bummer and it should stop, okay?

Models these days have to be a double threat – be able to work on the runway as well as in editorial shoots. Katie’s faves are the group of girls who earned the Supermodel moniker back in the 90’s because they had personality, a more athletic body type, and were badass.

Case in point: George Michael’s video for Freedom:

vogue-cover-xlarge.jpg

If you don’t already know this,  you are probably doing it wrong, but L to R Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford

Shalom Harlow is another 90’s favourite:

shalom095ik.jpg

Shalom Harlow closing Alexander McQueen’s 1999 show:

Speaking of the 90’s, the whole heroin chic thing was pretty gross:

20-years-of-ck-one-the-grit-minimal-revival-04.jpg

But we did get Tyra out of the deal, and she’s a patron saint of Hag:

Stella Tennant is another great product of the 90’s and she’s still killing it:

17-best-swimming-pools-in-vogue.jpg

stella-tennant-i-d.jpg

Getting into more recent era of modelling, Natalia Vodianova is a model that not only kills it on the runway and on the glossy pages, she is also a philanthropic badass:

NV_400x400.png

Petra Nomcova survived terrible tragedy during the tsunami that struck Thailand in 2004 by hanging on to a palm tree for 8 hours. She’s also a pretty good model I suppose.

PeU0GkrH.jpg

Jessica Stam is a well known (although not to Katie) Canadian model who has had a Marc Jacobs bag named after her that no one can afford:

jessica-stam-by-chad-pitman-for-vogue-ukraine-november-2013.jpg

This paparazzi shot seems like the right image to post for Bella Hadid:

rs_634x1024-160729174509-634.Bella-Hadid-Mohamed-Hadid-LA.ms.072916.jpg

Ho hum, we are all a bit tired of the white girls who dominate the field these days. It’s time for everyone to get their shit together and get some colour out there. The industry has to do better at representing diversity despite the many attempts that are made to blow that whistle every fashion week. Do better, you fabulous jerks, you have to.

Obsessions!

Abby has burned through Leah Remini’s Scientology and the Aftermath (which is on youtube, hunnies!) and it is a doozy:

Katie is obsessed with a new recipe for Caesars that, in the place of Dill infused vodka (which is hard to find but delicious), use the leftover pickle juice from that jar of pickles you have in the back of you fridge and freeze it into ice cubes – BAM – it is a game changer.

6728178171_7092fdf2e6.jpg

Evan is obsessed with a series called UNHhhh and it is hysterical. Here’s a taste:

Episode 30: Fashion Rules and Other Judgmental Nonsense

Happy New Year, Hags! And goodbye to 2016, may she rest in peace. Thanks for your patience on the lateness of our release but Abby had a friggin’ baby which really cramped our schedule. It won’t happen again. Probably.

This week we are chatting about fashion rules and when to break them but mostly a meandering chit chat about looking good, feeling good, and some straight up judgments about what people are wearing these days. Give us a listen, yes?

To kick off with a kiki, Abby went to a local Christmas market with a light maze and was reminded how to wear clothes that are appropriate for winter, a doi oi.

6a00e5508e95a988330120a8d77b96970b-640wi.jpg

How to dress for winter.

Katie shares a hilarious story about a broken horn, a truck being stolen (maybe?) and a Christmas miracle.

Evan went back to his love of dance and started taking Metis dance lessons again.

Let’s get into the fun stuff – rules of dress.
Fashion rules have a lot to do with context. Lots of rules of dress and dress codes are thanks to a fun patriarchal system that we live in.

Image result for veep gif abortion atm

Plus this rad company out of the UK called Boss wanted their male employees to understand what it is like for women with large breasts to just get through a day:

Katie outlines her Top Five Rules of dressing:

1. Always accessories.
2. Focus on fit and quality FIRST. This is the hardest one.
3. Wear proper underwear.
4. Don’t be afraid of colour.
5. Focus more on how you feel in your clothes, not how look in  your clothes.

Abby’s Christmas photo that caused such a headache as these things always seem to.

Amazed we were able to actually get a picture. Margot was not super in to it, big surprise!

A post shared by Abby Shumka (@abbyshumka) on

There are so many rules that we love to break and love to follow (and love to judge people on) such as wearing leggings as pants, revealing crotches, wearing white shoes, wearing flip flops, mixing black and navy, wearing brown in general, etc. What are some of your own rules?

Obsessions:

Evan is obsessed with the new film Jackie which looks amazing:

Abby is obsessed with Textillia, a similar website to Ravelry. It is an online community for sewing that lets users share their projects and foster connections with other like minded users. Find them on facebook and instagram too!

Episode 29: Cultural Appropriation in Fashion

Heeeeeey everybody! Episode 29! Approaching the dirty thirty – a phrase that should go into a dumb hole forever – but we have reason for exclamation points! We have a guest! For a semi-heavy topic! It’s gonna be fun, y’all!

We are talking about cultural appropriation in fashion – a light topic, we know – and we invited friend and super dope guest Vee Pho to chit chat – nay, kiki – about POC, fashion, and what the shit everyone is doing wrong.

LISTEN HERE: EPISODE 29

RSS FEED: http://fashionhags.libsyn.com/rss

First off the top, Evan is every the werq-ing girl, preparing for Christmas and holidays, despite the leaky roofs.

Abby is getting festive and excited about the snow that threatens to collapse everything Vancouverites know and love. Let the gingerbread house building begin!

Katie has also been prepping for the holidays and learning new words like “kiki” from Evan with thanks to the gays to whom we owe so much. (We actually talk like this, btw. Shout out to Little Edie.).

img_9087

Let’s get into the full kiki, shall we?

Cultural appropriation is rampant in these here parts despite the fact that our Canadian experience is a wee bit different than our neighbours to the South. We are hoping to open  up some dialogue about this super intricate subject and we have an Asian lady and a Metis dude to start things off.
In fashion, designers of days gone by have always looked to other cultures for inspiration. Shit gets tricky when you use that inspiration to make some sweet sweet cash off it without giving credit or any kind of due to those from whom the work has been used.

You know that feeling when you work super hard on a group project and some jerkoff who did nothing but got a rad grade on it? It’s kinda like that. But way more complicated.

Here’s a great example (and a bunch of other great articles about it):

ktz-fashion-label-copies-inuit-design.jpg

KTZ straight up stole this design from an inuit shaman’s family and then “apologized” for it.

Another fun example is DSquared2’s DSquaw (I’m serious) collection that apparently they did also “apologize” for that is so effing offensive that Katie wrote a piece on her blog about it.

And yet, Urban Outfitters still doesn’t seem to get it.

Watch We Were Children for a completely depressing and horrifying look at the way Canada treated its First Nations children. It’s seriously fucked up.

If you want to learn more (which you absolutely should), do some research on Residential schools and I absolutely recommend reading Thomas King’s The Inconvenient Indian please please please.

Speaking of the Olympics, Corrine Hunt is an amazing Tlingit and Komoyue artist from Alert Bay who designed the medals for the 2010 games. So. Fucking. Cool.

Screen Shot 2016-12-13 at 10.04.28 PM.png

Screen shot from corrinehunt.ca. Check out her work, it’s amazing!

Please please please comment below on what you think about this topic as we barely scratched the surface and it needs to be on the table. We do not have all the answers but we want to open a conversation. We are just two ladies and a dude (with the help of another lady) who are trying to do things right.

Start with doing the work to teach yourself when you are curious about other cultures and NOT getting that Chinese character tattoo you think is dope as hell. It isn’t. If you are white, sometimes it’s better to just sit back and listen, mmk?

PS – check this blog out as a good place to start learning! NativeAppropriations.com is a cool resource.

Obsessions!

Vee speaks right from the heart – and you can tell she means it – about her love/hate relationship with Subway veggie subs. They give her life, but they also frustrate the shit out of her!

Katie discovers Reductress – an amahzing place for a good old laugh/cry about what  it means to be a woman these days.

Evan’s obsession is also one shared by the lovely Vee – a documentary on Netflix about mass incarceration, Jim Crow, and the link between slavery and modern institutionalized racism. Not a knee-slapping good time but worth it none the less.

And to chase that, Abby shares her love of tiny dogs yet again with the instagram account Cheeky Chis. She had been calling it “Cheeky Chris” but just now realized thats totally not what its called! DOI OI OI OI. Anyway. Cute dogs abound so if you’re feeing down, check these pups out, they will make you feel better guaranteed.

I MEAN, COME ON NOW. LOOK AT THESE LITTLE FUCKERS.
